  1. IELTS
  2. TOEFL iBT
  3. Duolingo English Test
  4. How to decide

The best English test is the one every university on your shortlist accepts. Start there, then choose based on format and your strengths.

IELTS

Widely accepted in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, and by most US universities. Available on paper or computer, with a face-to-face speaking test that many students find more natural.

TOEFL iBT

Popular with US universities and widely accepted elsewhere. Fully computer-based, including speaking into a microphone. A good fit if you are comfortable typing and with American academic contexts.

Duolingo English Test

Taken online from home, shorter, and cheaper. Accepted by many universities, but not all, and it may not meet visa requirements in some countries. Confirm before you book.

How to decide

  • List the accepted tests for every university on your shortlist.
  • Check whether your visa route needs a specific test.
  • Take a free practice test for each option you are considering.
  • Pick the one where you score highest in your weakest skill.
