About Indian Institute of Technology Madras
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras was founded in 1959 with technical help from the then West German government. It is a public Institute of National Importance on a wooded 250-hectare campus in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and also runs a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. IIT Madras is ranked No. 1 overall and in Engineering in India's NIRF 2025. Foreign nationals join B.Tech through JEE (Advanced) and M.Tech, MS (Research) and PhD programmes through its Global Engagement office or ICCR.

IIT Madras admits foreign nationals in July and January. For the July 2026 MS and PhD session, applications ran from 11 November 2025 to 30 March 2026. B.Tech admission is once a year through JEE (Advanced). PIO/OCI card holders pay Indian national fees.
