What is the Scholastic Assessment Test - SAT?

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is a standardized college-readiness exam administered by the College Board, used by undergraduate admissions offices — mainly in the US — to assess a candidate's readiness for a bachelor's degree. It is delivered digitally through the Bluebook app and tests reading and writing skills alongside math reasoning, regardless of your specific school curriculum.

What the Scholastic Assessment Test - SAT Evaluates

Read & Interpret Short Passages

Identify main ideas, evidence and vocabulary in context across varied topics.

Apply Standard English Conventions

Recognize and correct grammar, punctuation and sentence-structure issues.

Solve Algebra & Data Problems

Apply algebra, advanced math and data analysis to real-world scenarios.

Pace Across Timed Modules

Manage four separately-timed modules, each with its own fixed clock.

Purpose & Philosophy

"Can this student read, write and reason with numbers at the level a bachelor's degree demands — regardless of which school or board they studied under?"

Good to know: Almost all undergraduate applicants only ever need the SAT itself. The PSAT/NMSQT is a separate, earlier test mainly relevant if you're still in an earlier year of school — see below.

Which Test in the SAT Suite Applies to You?

Select based on your current stage

Most Applicants →
SAT

The exam most US and Canadian undergraduate programs ask for

Younger Students →
PSAT/NMSQT

Taken earlier in school; also qualifies you for National Merit consideration

SAT vs. PSAT/NMSQT

Feature SAT PSAT/NMSQT
Purpose Undergraduate college applicants Students building toward the SAT, and National Merit qualification
Key Focus Reading & Writing and Math Same skill areas, at an earlier academic stage
Format & Frequency Digital, ~7 fixed dates a year at test centers Digital, once a year — usually October of 11th grade
The full SAT Suite of Assessments also includes PSAT 10 (10th grade, practice only) and PSAT 8/9 (8th-9th grade, an early baseline) — both share the same digital Bluebook format but don't count toward National Merit. Sukhada's coaching programme below is built around the SAT itself, which is what undergraduate applicants need.

Reach the test centre at least 30 minutes early
Reading & Writing comes first, then Math, with one 10-minute break between them
Each of the 4 modules is separately timed — time does not carry over

SAT dates are fixed and limited — register well ahead of your target date

How the Scholastic Assessment Test - SAT Is Scored

Two section scores: Reading and Writing, and Math, are each scored on a 200–800 scale. Your total score is the sum of the two, on a 400–1600 scale. There is no separate essay score — the optional essay was discontinued.

Total Score Bands (400 – 1600)

1500+
Highly Competitive

Strong for Ivy League and the most selective US universities

1400 - 1490
Competitive

Solid for most well-ranked national universities

1200 - 1390
Average

Acceptable for a wide range of universities

1000 - 1190
Below Average

May limit options at higher-ranked programs

Below 1000
Low

Likely to fall short of most four-year program expectations

How Does Module-Adaptive Scoring Work? Each section has two modules. Your performance on Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2 — and a harder Module 2 unlocks access to higher scores. This is section-level adaptive, not question-by-question.
Score Validity: 5 years from test date

Typical Competitive SAT Score for Applicants From

United States flag United States 1350 - 1450
Canada flag Canada 1300 - 1400
United Kingdom flag United Kingdom 1350 - 1450
Singapore flag Singapore 1400 - 1500
UAE flag UAE 1300 - 1400
Italy flag Italy 1300 - 1400
Exact requirements vary widely by university and programme — many colleges are also test-optional, and some weigh Math or Reading & Writing individually. Always verify with your target institution.

Retakes

The SAT doesn't impose a fixed waiting period between attempts the way some other exams do — you simply register for the next available date, and dates are offered roughly 7 times a year. Universities generally consider your best submitted score, and College Board's Score Choice feature lets you choose which test date's scores to send to each institution.
